The Hollywood Blame Game
I’d like to welcome Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, and Brett Ratner to the Hollywood Blame Game. Congrats newcomers, you’ve officially made it! You join an elite list with Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen and so many others who’ve captured our hearts and then crushed our souls with revelations of sexual deviancy. But are you really surprised America?
Hollywood and sex scandals have been dating since the beginning of time and it’s not going away anytime soon. So please lose the fake outrage and stop acting like you care. From Bill Cosby to Harvey Weinstein to Kevin Spacey, none of these revelations were anything new. Jokes and rumors had been surrounding these men for years. These things were common knowledge to both Hollywood insiders and the general public, but it didn’t matter. You still binge watched House of Cards and you still paid to see the latest Weinstein movie production. For years Americans have supported Hollywood pedophiles, perverts, and sickos. So please stop with the self righteous act.
I’m just as guilty as the next person, but I can accept it. I know when R Kelly’s "Ignition Remix" plays at the bar I’m instantly shouting the lyrics. It doesn’t matter that I’ve seen video of R Kelly peeing on a 15 year old girl, because Ignition is one of the catchiest songs ever made. Just like I know the second I hear the first beat of “Billie Jean" at a wedding I’m running to the dance floor. I love that song much more than the fact that Michael Jackson probably diddled kids.
I’ve learned to accept that many of my favorite actors, musicians, comedians, and athletes are complete human pieces of shit. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate their acting, voices, one liners, or ability to catch a football. I’m never going to justify gross savage behavior like rape, pedophilia, or sexual assault. But I’m also not going to point fingers. The truth is we have no clue what people do behind closed doors and that isn't limited to Hollywood. You don’t know if your accountant is a child molestor or if your car mechanic beats his wife. You have every right to stop supporting someone like Kevin Spacey, but you probably won’t. I’ll bet money you’ll still watch the final season of House of Cards, just like you’ll still stream Weinstein produced movies. At the end of the day we really don't care what these people these do behind closed doors.
Just remember we’re all hypocritical bad people…all of us! Your clothes were probably made in a sweat shop somewhere in Asia. Your food was probably picked by an underpaid immigrant. The device you're reading this blog on was probably made in a factory that violates human rights. We’re all guilty, so just accept it. So either boycott everything or just accept we’re all hypocrites and pick your battles. And trying to battle Hollywood is a cause you’re not going to win. Unless you want to give up watching TV, movies, and listening to music. Because people in this business are sick fucks. Trust me I know, because I’m one of them. So good luck with your witch hunt and faux outrage. While you’re wasting energy with that 3 paragraph Facebook status I’ll be falling asleep to American Beauty, a classic American tale where art truly imitates life.
